49th Foundation Day Celebration of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya

ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya celebrated its 49th Foundation Day on 9th January, 2024 which was presided over by Hon’ble Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR) Dr. Himanshu Pathak, as the Chief Guest of the function. On this occasion, administrative buildings of KVK Anjaw of Arunachal Pradesh and KVK Longleng of Nagaland were inaugurated in virtual mode. Dr. M.S.Swaminathan Conference Hall was also inaugurated on this important occasion by the Hon’ble DG. Further, Hon’ble DG, ICAR has also laid down the Foundation Stone of Girls Hostel for the students of IARI-Umiam Hub. He also felicitated five farmer's, one each from Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim for their outstanding contribution in practicing the recommended package of practices and technologies, by awarding a citation, mementoes and a cash prize of Rs.10,000 to each farmer. Dr. Himanshu Pathak dedicated his foundation day lecture to Dr. M.S.Swaminathan by describing his unparallel contribution and his entire life dedication towards the growth of agricultural research system and agriculture production in the country. Dr. Suresh Kumar Chaudhari, DDG (NRM), ICAR was the Guest of Honour whereas Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah, the former DDG (Animal Sciences), ICAR and former Vice Chancellor Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat; Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor of Central Agricultural University, Imphal; Dr. B.C. Deka, Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat and Shri Naveen Kumar Bansal, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Shillong were the Special Guests of the function. Dr. V.K. Mishra, Director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, presented his welcome address and highlighted the immense achievements and contributions of the Institute in last 49 years towards agricultural science and society of NEH Region. He applauded the collective, efficient and continuous effort of each and every staff of the Institute at all levels for bringing the institute to its present stature. Dr. B. C. Deka, Vice Chancellor, Assam Agriculture University, Jorhat congratulate the Institute and emphasized on publication that needs to be translated into a bundle of technologies that will provide livelihood and business opportunities for the rural youth of NEH Region. Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor, Central Agriculture University, Imphal focussed on the agricultural advancement and sustainable development such as improve varieties, efficient irrigation system, fostering partnership and entrepreneurship in north-eastern part of the country. Dr. K.M. Bujarbaruah, narrated his long association with the institute of about 48 years since its formative stage. He said that the institute has a lot of expectations regarding the north-east policy and achieving the SGDs goal by 2030. Dr. Suresh Kumar Chaudhari, Deputy Director General (NRM), ICAR, New Delhi, said that the growth of this institute in all dimension is tremendous. Adding that ecosystem in this region has developed but remained unaffected by unwanted destruction. He emphasized that this institute has been a unique one and has develop many torch bearers’ personalities. This event was participated by the senior level officers of the Govt. of Meghalaya. Besides, a farmers fair was also organized by putting-up the exhibition stalls (41) in which more than 100 technologies and specialty products of the region were displayed including the ethnic food of the region. It was participated by all the regional centres, KVKs of ICAR Research Complex and the agripreneures, farmers and the College of Post Graduate Studies (CPGS), Umiam of CAU. The programme ended with the vote of thanks presented by Dr. B.P. Singh, organizing secretary and Head, DTAC of the Institute.
